WILLEMSTAD – Despite suffering a heavy defeat in its World Cup debut, Curaçao remains very much alive in the race for a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Blue Wave, led by head coach Dick Advocaat, endured a difficult start to the tournament with a 7-1 loss to four-time world champion Germany. However, Curaçao responded impressively in its second Group E match, battling Ecuador to a scoreless draw behind a standout performance by veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room.

The result leaves Curaçao with one point from two matches and still in contention for a place in the Round of 32.
The qualification equation is now relatively straightforward. To guarantee progression, Curaçao must defeat Ivory Coast in its final group match on June 25. At the same time, Germany must avoid defeat against Ecuador.
Germany has already secured first place in Group E after winning its first two matches. The battle for second place is now between Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curaçao.
If Curaçao defeats Ivory Coast and Ecuador fails to beat Germany, the Blue Wave will secure second place in the group and advance directly to the knockout stage. Should Ecuador upset Germany, Curaçao would likely need a large-margin victory over Ivory Coast to overcome its current goal difference disadvantage.
The standings heading into the final round show Germany on six points, Ivory Coast on three, and both Ecuador and Curaçao on one point. While Curaçao currently sits at the bottom of the group because of goal difference, victory against Ivory Coast would dramatically change the picture.
There is also another route forward. The expanded 48-team World Cup allows the eight best third-placed teams to qualify for the knockout phase. With that format, Curaçao could still advance even if it finishes third in Group E.
However, football analysts believe that one or two points will almost certainly not be enough to rank among the best third-placed teams. That means Curaçao's mission remains clear: beat Ivory Coast and reach four points.
For a nation of just over 150,000 people making its first-ever World Cup appearance, simply reaching the tournament was already considered historic. Now, with one match remaining, Curaçao stands just 90 minutes away from potentially achieving one of the greatest moments in the island's sporting history.
The decisive Group E matches will be played simultaneously on June 25, when Curaçao faces Ivory Coast and Germany takes on Ecuador.
