WILLEMSTAD – Following the exciting final of the Fundashon Bicentini World Cup 2026 youth tournament on Sunday, June 7, Governor of Curaçao, His Excellency Mauritsz de Kort, welcomed the two winning teams on Tuesday, June 9, for a friendly post-tournament match in the gardens of the Governor’s Palace.

The Argentina team, represented by students from the Monseigneur Willem Ellis School, faced off against the Brazil team, represented by students from the Emmy Berthold School. In a relaxed and sporting atmosphere, the children enjoyed a special afternoon with the Governor.
Argentina had previously won the tournament, while Brazil received the Tribune Award. The award was presented to the team that most creatively decorated and painted the stadium seating area in the colors and spirit of the country they represented. Among Brazil’s players was Thiago Rafael Encarnacion, who was named the tournament’s Best Player.

Through the reception, Governor De Kort sought to recognize the young participants for their dedication, sportsmanship, creativity, and teamwork. At the same time, he encouraged the children to continue developing their talents and pursuing their dreams.
The Governor reminded the youngsters that great achievements often begin with small steps. Referring to the Blue Wave, the nickname of Curaçao’s national football team, he emphasized that every elite athlete once started as a child with a dream, a ball, and the determination to keep practicing. With perseverance, discipline, and enjoyment, he said, young talents can grow into the athletes and leaders of tomorrow.
The gathering also served as a fitting lead-up to the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches, which begin later this week. For Curaçao, the tournament represents a historic milestone, as the national team has qualified for the World Cup for the first time ever.
Governor De Kort expressed hope that the achievements of the Blue Wave will inspire young people across the island to believe in themselves and pursue their ambitions, both in sports and in other areas of life.
Following the friendly match in the Palace gardens, participants enjoyed an informal gathering with school representatives and members of Fundashon Bicentini. The visit concluded with group photographs to commemorate what organizers described as a special and inspiring afternoon.
