PHILIPSBURG – Regional airline Winair has reached a major milestone in aviation safety by becoming the first airline in the world to simultaneously obtain both the IOSA and ISSA safety certifications of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
With the two audit registrations, Winair’s entire fleet now complies with internationally recognized aviation safety standards. Preparations for the extensive certification process began in early 2024.
IOSA, the IATA Operational Safety Audit, evaluates an airline’s operational management and control systems against international standards. ISSA, the IATA Standard Safety Assessment, is designed for operators whose aircraft or operational models fall outside the scope of the traditional IOSA program.
Obtaining both registrations is particularly relevant for Winair because the airline operates different aircraft types across its regional Caribbean network.
Winair CEO Hans van de Velde said safety remains the foundation of the company’s operations and described the international recognition as an important achievement for the airline.
Beyond safety, the certifications could also strengthen Winair’s position when negotiating partnerships with larger international carriers. International airlines frequently consider recognized safety audit standards when entering into commercial and operational cooperation agreements.
According to Winair, the achievement will make it easier to establish new partnerships that could provide passengers with improved and faster connections between the Caribbean and destinations in Europe and North America.
The milestone also strengthens Winair’s position as a regional carrier connecting several Caribbean islands with major international gateways, while demonstrating that its operations meet internationally recognized safety requirements.
