Winair Aircraft Forced Off Runway by Sudden Wind Gust During Landing in St. Maarten

Local, Caribbean, | By Correspondent April 4, 2026

PHILIPSBURG – A regional aircraft operated by Winair veered off the runway during landing on Thursday after being struck by a sudden and powerful wind gust, according to video footage circulating on social media.

The incident occurred as the aircraft was performing a crosswind landing, a maneuver required when wind approaches the runway at an angle. In such situations, pilots must carefully align the aircraft against the wind and make precise corrections just before touchdown to ensure the wheels land straight on the runway.

Video images show the aircraft initially making the necessary corrections, with the pilot attempting to stabilize the plane and maintain its position along the runway centerline. However, shortly after touchdown, a strong gust of wind appears to push the aircraft sideways.

Despite visible counter-steering, the plane lost alignment, rotated and slid off the runway.

The final phase of landing is considered particularly critical, as the aircraft is slowing down and control effectiveness is reduced. At the same time, sudden wind gusts can have a significant impact, especially on smaller aircraft.

Aircraft commonly used in regional aviation, such as those operated by Winair, are relatively lightweight and therefore more sensitive to strong crosswinds. While pilots are specifically trained to handle such conditions, sudden and unpredictable gusts can still pose serious challenges.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The event highlights the risks associated with crosswind landings in the Caribbean, where rapidly changing weather conditions can affect flight operations, particularly at airports exposed to strong coastal winds.
