WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s historic World Cup qualification will take center stage this weekend as downtown Willemstad transforms into one giant “Blue Wave experience” during the Blue Wave Innercity Willemstad Festival.
The free three-day festival officially kicks off tonight with a Block Party across the city center. Fireworks are scheduled for 7:45 p.m., half an hour earlier than the usual Punda Vibes fireworks display.
Punda, Otrobanda, Pietermaai, and Scharloo will remain dedicated to culture, sports, and national pride through Saturday as Curaçao celebrates the national football team’s historic participation in the World Cup.
To help create the atmosphere, Aqualectra will illuminate the entire downtown area with special blue festive lighting throughout the evening.
The event, made possible in part through support from the government and MCB Bank, features a packed entertainment and cultural program.
Friday evening’s activities will center around Brionplein in Otrobanda, where a large cultural and musical show will take place. Under the direction of the Randal Corsen Orchestra, several major artists are scheduled to perform, including Tania Kross, Dibo D, and Adjatay.
Saturday’s program will focus on sports and fashion. In the morning, Fundashon Bicentini will organize youth football matches across the four downtown districts.
Later in the day, designer Keano Manuel will present a special fashion show on the Queen Emma Bridge, better known as the Pontjesbrug. The festival will conclude with a free live concert by Aruban singer Jeon.
Hans van Aalst, who serves as quartermaster for the initiative, said the festival is intended to position downtown Willemstad as Curaçao’s vibrant shared living room, bringing together culture, sports, entertainment, and national unity around the Blue Wave celebration.
