Vrijheidsmaaltijden in Curaçao to Take on More Public and Symbolic Character

Local, | By Correspondent February 11, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – This year’s Vrijheidsmaaltijden (freedom meals) in Curaçao will have a more pronounced public and symbolic character, with the event set to take place on May 5 in the immediate surroundings of the Governor’s Palace.

The new approach was discussed during a meeting on Monday between participating organizations and the Governor of Curaçao, Mauritsz de Kort, as part of preparations for the annual Freedom Meals held around Liberation Day.

Representing the organizing parties at the meeting were Anja van Bergen, Marijn Bom and Nanelia Walfenzo. They are affiliated with St. Turtuga Entertainment & Art, the Freedom Festival Fleur de Marie and the Vrijheidsmaaltijden initiative.

The choice of a location near the Governor’s Palace is intended to emphasize the public nature of the gathering. As in previous editions, the central focus will be on sharing a meal together, combined with open discussions about the meaning of freedom, democracy and social connection. The initiative aims to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and create space for dialogue and mutual understanding.

A new addition this year will be live music, highlighting the role of culture and shared experiences in strengthening community bonds. Organizers have indicated that further details regarding the program and participation will be announced at a later date.

The Vrijheidsmaaltijden form part of the broader 5 May tradition, during which freedom is not only commemorated, but also actively reflected upon and experienced within society.
