WILLEMSTAD – A group of volunteers led by environmental initiative Kunuku Man collected more than 230 kilograms of waste during a cleanup operation at Nieuwe Haven near the Coca-Cola facility on Saturday, highlighting the ongoing challenge of littering across Curaçao.
Despite the intense heat, volunteers spent the day removing large quantities of discarded bottles, cans and other waste from the area.

According to figures released by Kunuku Man, the cleanup effort resulted in the collection of 470 empty beer bottles, weighing a total of 94 kilograms. Volunteers also gathered 225 aluminum cans, weighing approximately 3 kilograms, and 300 plastic bottles, weighing 6 kilograms. All of these materials will be recycled.
In addition, the team removed 128 kilograms of general waste that could not be recycled and will be sent to the landfill.
In total, the cleanup operation removed 231 kilograms of litter from the area.
Kunuku Man used the occasion to urge motorists and residents not to throw garbage from their vehicles and to dispose of waste responsibly at home. The organization also encouraged the public to recycle glass, aluminum cans and plastic bottles, noting that these materials can be exchanged for money through local recycling programs.
The environmental group praised the volunteers who participated in the cleanup, describing them as “heroes” for their efforts to help keep Curaçao clean.
The weekly cleanup initiative forms part of a broader campaign aimed at raising awareness about littering and environmental responsibility on the island. Kunuku Man continues to invite residents to participate in future cleanup activities and learn more about solutions to Curaçao’s waste management challenges.
“Only together can we keep Curaçao clean,” the organization said in its message to the community.
