Volunteers Collect 152 Kilograms of Trash Along Curaçao Boulevard, Including 425 Beer Bottles

Local, | By Correspondent November 2, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – A volunteer cleanup operation along Abraham Mendes Chumaceiro Boulevard on Sunday, November 1, 2026, resulted in the collection of an alarming 152 kilograms of discarded waste, including hundreds of beer bottles, aluminum cans and plastic containers.

The cleanup was organized by the environmental initiative The Kunuku Man, whose volunteers spent part of their Sunday removing litter from a section of the busy boulevard despite the intense Caribbean heat.

According to figures shared by The Kunuku Man on social media, volunteers collected 425 empty beer bottles weighing approximately 85 kilograms, 225 aluminum cans weighing three kilograms, and 300 plastic bottles weighing six kilograms.

An additional 58 kilograms consisted of miscellaneous waste scattered along the roadside.

In total, the volunteers removed 950 bottles and cans, in addition to other discarded materials, bringing the combined weight to 152 kilograms.

The amount of waste collected from just one section of the boulevard highlights the continuing problem of illegal dumping and irresponsible littering across Curaçao.

Kunuku Man Calls for an End to Irresponsible Littering

Following the cleanup, The Kunuku Man expressed frustration over the large quantities of garbage that continue to accumulate along public roads.

In his social media message, he urged residents to stop throwing waste into the environment and take responsibility for properly disposing of their garbage.

The environmental activist emphasized that keeping Curaçao clean should not depend entirely on volunteers who repeatedly dedicate their free time to removing waste left behind by others.

The discovery of hundreds of beer bottles and plastic containers along the boulevard illustrates how everyday consumer waste contributes to the island's environmental challenges.

Despite the disappointing amount of garbage collected, The Kunuku Man praised the volunteers who participated in Sunday's operation.

He described their dedication as an example for the wider community and thanked them for their willingness to work under difficult weather conditions to improve the island's surroundings.

Volunteers Receive Support From Local Business

During a break for refreshments and fruit, the volunteers received reusable KANO OBA water bottles donated by Interbrands Caribbean B.V.

The Kunuku Man thanked the company for supporting the initiative and providing a practical gift to those participating in the cleanup.

The donation was warmly received by the volunteers and represented an additional contribution from the private sector to the community effort.

Simple Measures Can Help Prevent Roadside Litter

In addition to calling for responsible waste disposal, The Kunuku Man shared a practical recommendation for households placing garbage containers along the roadside for collection.

He advised residents to secure the lids of their garbage bins, for example by placing a stone on top, to prevent lightweight waste from being blown into the street by strong winds.

According to the environmental activist, such simple precautions can significantly reduce the amount of loose garbage that ends up along roadsides and in surrounding neighborhoods.

The recommendation reflects the initiative's broader message that small individual actions can contribute to keeping Curaçao cleaner.

More Volunteers Needed for Weekly Cleanups

The Kunuku Man continues to organize weekly cleanup activities and is encouraging more residents to become involved.

The latest cleanup demonstrates the important contribution of community volunteers, but it also raises a broader concern about the continued accumulation of waste in public spaces.

With 152 kilograms of garbage collected from only part of Abraham Mendes Chumaceiro Boulevard, The Kunuku Man is once again urging residents to recognize that protecting Curaçao's environment requires the participation and responsibility of the entire community.
