THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – Recent developments in Venezuela have convinced the Dutch government that Curaçao and the wider Caribbean region need stronger preparations for geopolitical and climate-related crises.
The conclusion is included in the Netherlands’ 2027 Kingdom Relations budget.
According to the Dutch government, events in Venezuela demonstrated that the Caribbean is a vulnerable region.
The Kingdom will therefore work with Curaçao and the other countries and islands to identify their most important vulnerabilities and improve resilience against crises connected to geopolitical and climatic developments.
The Netherlands will also contribute to the Caribbean Civil Protection Mechanism, a regional cooperation platform for crisis management.
Crisis exercises are expected to be organized to improve both preparedness and cooperation between the islands.
For Curaçao, the issue has particular relevance because of its geographic proximity to Venezuela and the island’s dependence on international supply chains for essential goods.
The budget does not identify a specific crisis scenario involving Curaçao or say that a crisis is expected. Instead, it treats the situation in Venezuela as evidence of the need for stronger regional preparedness.
The approach forms part of a broader Dutch policy that views geopolitical tensions and climate change as factors capable of exposing economic and security vulnerabilities in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.
