WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Business Association (VBC) says it will not take a public position on the future of tourism until the government releases the findings of a tourism study launched in 2023, arguing that doing so before the consultation process is complete would be premature.
In a statement, VBC noted that the Ministry of Economic Development and the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) initiated a comprehensive Tourism Carrying Capacity Study in 2023 to examine the island's long-term tourism strategy. The association said it participated in several consultation sessions during the process, contributing the views and concerns of Curaçao's organized business community.
Nearly three years later, however, the study's findings and accompanying policy recommendations have yet to be published.
According to VBC, it would be irresponsible to speculate on or respond to conclusions that have not yet been made public. The organization said adopting a definitive public position before the consultation process has been completed could undermine the integrity of the process.
VBC emphasized that determining Curaçao's tourism policy and broader economic direction is ultimately the responsibility of the government. The association said its role is to represent the interests of the private sector, contribute constructively to policy discussions, and evaluate government proposals with the goal of promoting a healthy, competitive, and future-proof economy.
Once the study is published, VBC said it will carefully analyze the findings and participate in the public debate by presenting concrete recommendations.
The statement comes in response to recent criticism suggesting that the business association has remained too quiet during discussions about the future of tourism on the island.
VBC rejected that criticism, arguing that responsible leadership is not measured by who speaks first, but by ensuring that public positions are based on careful analysis and a transparent policymaking process.
The organization reaffirmed its support for an economic model that balances sustainable growth with entrepreneurship, quality of life, social development, and the overall well-being of the community.
