SAN JUAN – The United States Coast Guard has intercepted a suspected drug-smuggling vessel off the coast of Puerto Rico carrying more than 7,000 pounds of cocaine, dealing another major blow to maritime trafficking operations in the Caribbean.
Five suspected smugglers traveling aboard the vessel were taken into custody during the operation.
According to information about the interception, authorities recovered more than 7,000 pounds of cocaine, equivalent to more than 3.1 metric tons.
The seizure represents a significant quantity of narcotics prevented from reaching its intended destination and highlights the continued use of Caribbean maritime routes by transnational drug-trafficking organizations.
Puerto Rico and surrounding Caribbean waters are strategically located along trafficking routes connecting South America with markets in the United States and elsewhere. U.S. authorities regularly deploy Coast Guard vessels and aircraft throughout the region to detect and intercept suspected smuggling operations.
In this latest case, the vessel was successfully intercepted and all five people aboard were detained rather than escaping or continuing toward their destination.
The confiscated cocaine is now in U.S. custody, while the five suspects face further investigation and possible prosecution in connection with the shipment.
