WILLEMSTAD – The appeal in the criminal case against Urvin “Nuto” Wawoe will continue next week, with a pro forma hearing scheduled for Thursday, October 8. The alleged leader of the No Limit Soldiers (NLS) is challenging the life sentence imposed on him in Curaçao.
Wawoe was sentenced to life imprisonment after the Court found that he had played a leading role in the No Limit Soldiers criminal organization for years.
According to the judgment, Wawoe directed activities within the organization, ordered contract killings on Sint Maarten and was involved in organizing large-scale drug shipments.
He was, however, acquitted of involvement in the notorious 2014 Hato Airport shooting in Curaçao.
That attack, which took place outside the arrivals hall of Curaçao International Airport, became one of the island’s most notorious episodes of gang violence. Despite the allegations against Wawoe in the broader criminal proceedings, the Court found insufficient grounds to convict him for that shooting.
Wawoe and his attorney, Alicia Blonk, are appealing the life sentence.
The October 8 hearing will be pro forma, meaning the case will not necessarily be argued on its merits at that stage. Such hearings are generally used to discuss the status and further planning of proceedings, including possible investigative requests and scheduling.
The appeal will ultimately determine whether Wawoe’s convictions and life sentence will stand or whether the judgment against him will be changed.
