WILLEMSTAD – The union DOEN has defended its case in court over a delayed salary increase for education personnel, arguing that teachers are entitled to a pay step that should have been implemented in August 2024.
According to the union, the government has failed to honor this obligation, resulting in unequal treatment within the sector. DOEN is seeking recognition of the teachers’ right to receive the outstanding salary adjustment.
The government disputes the claim, arguing that the matter should not be handled by a civil court but instead falls under the jurisdiction of the administrative (civil servant) court. It also stated during the hearing that salary agreements are made through consultations with unions and that individual teachers have the option to file objections.
DOEN countered that the issue affects a broader group and should be addressed collectively, emphasizing concerns about fairness and consistency in the application of salary agreements.
The court has heard arguments from both sides and is expected to deliver its ruling on May 4, 2026.
