UN Says Curaçao Aligning National Development Plan With Sustainable Development Goals

WILLEMSTAD – The United Nations says Curaçao has taken an important step toward integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into national policymaking after the government agreed to align its National Development Plan with both the SDGs and the priorities of the Pisas III Cabinet.

According to the UN Annual Results Report, the process followed an extensive evidence-based assessment carried out in cooperation with the Central Bureau of Statistics and Curaçao's SDG Committee.

The project included three major components: a Policy Alignment Mapping that reviewed how existing government strategies correspond with the SDGs, a Budget Allocation Tagging exercise that examined how public spending supports sustainable development objectives, and an indicator-based performance review to identify where faster progress is needed.

The UN also supported the development of 44 SDG indicator templates covering six priority goals and 85 measurable indicators, laying the foundation for a national SDG monitoring dashboard.

According to the report, UNDP representatives later presented the findings directly to Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas and the Council of Ministers. Following those discussions, the government agreed to align the National Development Plan with the Sustainable Development Goals and the policy priorities of Cabinet Pisas III.

The UN describes the initiative as more than a technical exercise, saying it creates a framework that links government policy, public spending and measurable development results, allowing future investment decisions to become more transparent and evidence-based.
