UN Criticizes Inequality and Poverty Risks in Curaçao

Local, | By Correspondent February 17, 2026

THE HAGUE - Despite progress in poverty reduction at Kingdom level, the UN Committee warns that poverty and inequality remain disproportionately high in Curaçao and the Caribbean Netherlands. High living costs, particularly for food, electricity and water, continue to erode living standards on the island .

The Committee recommends the development of a multidimensional poverty measurement tool that explicitly includes Curaçao. Such a tool would move beyond income alone and account for access to healthcare, housing, education and social security.

Without targeted interventions, the Committee warns that vulnerable groups, including single-parent households, migrants and low-income families, remain at elevated risk.
