WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao police arrested a 46-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman after officers found a firearm inside their vehicle during an overnight inspection on Pater Eeuwensweg.
The incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. when officers were carrying out a check at a parking lot along Pater Eeuwensweg.
According to the information released, the man and woman were sitting inside a vehicle when they noticed the approaching police officers. The driver allegedly attempted to leave the parking lot, but officers quickly blocked the vehicle and prevented it from driving away.
Police subsequently searched the car and discovered a firearm. The weapon was immediately confiscated.
Both occupants were arrested at the scene. Following questioning, the 36-year-old woman was released. The 46-year-old driver remains in custody while the investigation continues.
The operation formed part of “Satis Est,” an intensified police campaign launched earlier this month in response to an increase in certain types of crime on Curaçao.
Police previously announced that Satis Est — Latin for “it is enough” — would involve additional police units on the streets during both daytime and nighttime hours, as well as targeted searches, traffic checks and operations against illegal firearms. The campaign followed increases in residential and commercial burglaries, theft of vehicle parts and, to a lesser extent, robberies.
Illegal firearm possession remains a major concern for law enforcement and the judiciary on Curaçao. Courts have repeatedly emphasized the dangers posed by uncontrolled firearms, particularly because illegal weapons can contribute to shootings and other violent crimes on the island.
The investigation into the firearm found on Pater Eeuwensweg is continuing.
