MIAMI – Tropical Storm Cristobal weakened into a tropical depression early Thursday morning and is expected to dissipate completely later in the day as strong winds and cooler ocean waters continue to disrupt the system.
Meanwhile, meteorologists are monitoring two new tropical disturbances over the Atlantic Ocean. Neither system currently poses a direct threat to Curaçao.
The first disturbance, designated Invest 92L, is located roughly halfway between the west coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles. It currently has an 80 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours.
If the system strengthens sufficiently to become a named tropical storm, it would be called Dolly.
Conditions are expected to become less favorable as the system moves toward the Caribbean. Increasingly unfavorable winds could limit further strengthening as it approaches the region.
A second disturbance, Invest 94L, is following farther behind in the Atlantic. It has a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression during the next two days, with the probability increasing to 50 percent over the longer term.
Both disturbances remain far from Curaçao, and neither represents an immediate threat to the island at this time.
The development and eventual tracks of the systems will become clearer over the coming days as they continue moving across the Atlantic.
