WILLEMSTAD – A total of 6,682 traffic incidents were registered in Curaçao during the first six months of 2026, involving 12,372 vehicles, according to the latest Road Safety Bulletin released by the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning (VVRP). Despite the high number of incidents, traffic fatalities declined significantly compared to the same period last year.
The report covers the period from January 1 through June 30, 2026, and shows that seven people lost their lives in traffic accidents, compared to 12 fatalities during the first half of 2025.
In addition to traffic accidents, authorities also recorded other vehicle-related incidents, including theft, vandalism, arson and damage caused by natural events such as flooding. During the six-month period, 200 vehicles were reported stolen, 110 were vandalized and 21 vehicles were intentionally set on fire.
Nearly 2,000 Injuries Recorded
The statistics show that 1,949 people were injured in traffic-related incidents during the first half of the year. The monthly figures ranged from 300 injuries in April to a peak of 350 in February. Authorities also recorded 649 incidents involving pedestrians.
The highest number of traffic incidents was registered in May, with 1,219 cases, while April recorded the lowest monthly total with 1,068 incidents. Overall monthly figures were:
· January: 1,097 incidents
· February: 1,089 incidents
· March: 1,117 incidents
· April: 1,068 incidents
· May: 1,219 incidents
· June: 1,092 incidents
Rear-End Collisions Most Common
When excluding thefts, vandalism, arson and other non-traffic incidents, authorities counted 6,351 actual traffic accidents during the first half of the year, up from 5,174 during the same period in 2025.
Rear-end collisions were the most common type of accident, accounting for 1,578 cases or 23.6 percent of all accidents. They were followed by:
· Side-impact collisions: 1,279 cases (19.1%)
· Reversing collisions: 1,096 cases (16.4%)
· Side collisions: 909 cases (13.6%)
· Single-vehicle accidents: 848 cases (12.7%)
· Frontal collisions: 188 cases (2.8%)
· Multiple-vehicle collisions: 141 cases (2.1%)
· Parking-related collisions: 126 cases (1.9%)
Driver Behavior Identified as Main Cause
The report highlights driver behavior as the primary factor behind most accidents.
Authorities found that inattention was involved in 6,298 incidents, representing 94.2 percent of all registered cases. Failure to yield was cited in 990 cases (14.8%), while abnormal driving maneuvers contributed to 461 accidents (6.9%).
According to the ministry, these figures demonstrate that driver conduct—both conscious and unconscious—remains the leading contributor to road accidents on the island.
Caracasbaaiweg Tops Accident Hotspots
The bulletin also identifies the island’s most dangerous roads based on accident frequency.
Caracasbaaiweg recorded the highest number of accidents with 247 cases, followed by F.D. Rooseveltweg with 227 and Schottegatweg Noord with 203. Other major hotspots were Winston Churchillweg with 179 accidents and Santa Rosaweg with 168.
The Ministry of VVRP said the findings will help shape this year’s Road Safety Week campaign, which will focus heavily on improving driver behavior and reducing preventable accidents on Curaçao’s roads.
