To the Editor: Power to the People. Why Virtual Power Plants are the Future of Curaçao's Grid

Today’s warning from Aqualectra in the Chronicle serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our island's infrastructure. With the hotter season arriving earlier than usual, many of our neighborhoods are bracing for rotating two-hour power interruptions tonight. We are facing a perfect storm: electricity demand is projected to soar to 139 megawatts by 11:00 p.m., while wind generation is forecast to plummet to a mere 10 MW.

Aqualectra is doing what it can. But with only 98 MW of conventional generating capacity available and a maximum of 14 MW coming from their battery system at peak hours, we are still staring down a crippling capacity deficit of up to 32 MW tonight. As Curaçao aggressively pursues an ambitious target of 70% renewable energy, these intermittency issues—what happens when the wind stops blowing or the sun stops shining—will only become more frequent. The solution to this modern problem is not to backtrack to heavy diesel generators, but to look toward the future: Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).

A Virtual Power Plant is a software-driven network that aggregates thousands of distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as home solar panels, residential batteries, electric vehicles, and smart thermostats—into a single, flexible power entity. Instead of relying solely on massive, centralized power stations, a VPP turns everyday consumers into active participants in grid stability.

Aqualectra already handles over 1,000 private solar customers across the island. Imagine if, instead of scheduling neighborhood blackouts, the utility could seamlessly tap into a localized "virtual network" of privately owned home batteries. When wind generation drops on a Saturday night, intelligent VPP software could automatically pull tiny fractions of stored power from thousands of homes and businesses to balance the grid. Furthermore, by utilizing VPP strategies like "demand response" and "dynamic load shaping," the grid can automatically communicate with smart home devices to cost-effectively manage peak demand and prevent infrastructure overload.

Aqualectra has already laid a strong foundation by partnering with Wärtsilä to deploy the GEMS Digital Energy Platform, which currently acts as the underlying intelligence for the utility's microgrid. To truly secure our electrical future, however, we must expand this capability to the consumer level, integrating software that can tie together a decentralized network of citizen-owned batteries.

The future of Curaçao’s electrical power should not rely entirely on the shoulders of a single utility company struggling against the weather. We need forward-thinking policies that incentivize residents and business owners to install home batteries and share their stored energy with the grid during critical shortages.

Let’s empower our citizens to be part of the solution. By embracing Virtual Power Plants, we can build a resilient, decentralized grid that keeps Curaçao "dushi"—and keeps the lights on.
