Tensions between fishermen and jetski operators at Playa Santa Cruz addressed by government

| By Correspondent February 24, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – In recent days, tensions have arisen between fishermen and jetski operators at Playa Santa Cruz, the government has confirmed. Fishermen complain that jetskis moving at high speed close to the shore are causing unrest in the water, frightening away fish and making it more difficult to carry out their daily activities. In addition, waves generated by the jetskis are said to pose a risk of damage to fishing boats.

The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature, Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature, has held several consultations with both parties in an effort to calm the situation. Another on-site meeting took place on Thursday at the beach, attended by representatives of the fishermen, jetski operators and the Curaçao Police Force. During that meeting, concrete agreements were made to improve coexistence at the popular beach.

One of the measures agreed upon is the relocation of the cable to which the jetskis are moored. This adjustment is intended to ensure that the area remains more accessible for fishermen and their fishing nets. Authorities also announced that supervision will be increased to ensure that both workers and tourists comply with the applicable rules.

Further changes include modifications to the slipway, allowing boats to be launched more easily. At the request of the fishermen, posts will be installed near the fishing harbor, making it mandatory for both boats and jetskis to use the slipway. This measure is aimed at reducing conflicts over space and improving safety.

The government is also considering installing a barrier near the mangrove area to prevent motorized vehicles from driving under the mangrove trees, in order to protect the sensitive natural environment.

With these measures, the government aims to restore a better balance between traditional fishing activities and tourism at Playa Santa Cruz. Visitors are urged to be considerate of one another and to help prevent further disturbances at the beach.
