Temporary Nature of Oil Storage Highlighted Amid Concerns Over Long-Term Strategy

Local, Politics, | By Correspondent April 8, 2026

THE HAGUE – Recent oil storage activities in Curaçao are considered temporary and do not indicate a long-term shift toward becoming a fossil fuel transit hub, according to the Dutch government.

Responding to concerns raised in Parliament, ministers stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest that Curaçao is being structurally positioned as a hub for fossil fuels.

They emphasized that the activities are separate from Dutch energy and climate policy, which remains focused on reducing dependence on fossil fuels and achieving international climate targets.

The clarification aims to address concerns about potential conflicts between Curaçao’s economic activities and broader European climate commitments.
