WILLEMSTAD – A tanker that delivered Venezuelan oil to Curaçao has been detained after authorities confirmed it was operating under a false flag and carrying invalid documentation.
The vessel, identified as the MT Regina, was initially allowed to dock and unload its cargo. However, further investigation—supported by Dutch maritime experts—revealed that the ship had falsely claimed registration under the flag of East Timor.
Authorities also noted irregularities including incorrect certification and issues related to maritime identification systems. Following a second inspection, the vessel was detained and will remain in port until it complies with international maritime standards.
Officials emphasized that allowing the ship to dock enabled authorities to carry out a full inspection under port state control, ultimately leading to enforcement action.
