WILLEMSTAD – A man who works packing customers’ groceries at Mangusá Supermarket in Rio Canario was arrested after allegedly driving away in a customer’s car instead of returning her keys.
The incident occurred during the afternoon after a regular customer handed her car key to one of the supermarket’s grocery baggers, locally known as pakdo’s.
The woman was accustomed to giving her key to a bagger so that her groceries could be taken to the vehicle and loaded inside. The employee would normally return the key afterward.
This time, however, after placing the groceries in the vehicle, the man allegedly got into the Volkswagen, started it and drove away.
A citizen who noticed what was happening followed the vehicle and alerted police, providing authorities with information about its location.
Police were able to intercept the Volkswagen a short time later on Schottegatweg Noord near Goisco.
The suspect was arrested and taken to a police station for further investigation. Authorities are seeking to determine what he intended to do with the vehicle.
The customer was reportedly shaken by the incident. Police have not released the suspect’s name or age.
