Study in Curaçao Finds Link Between Substance Abuse, Binge Drinking and Suicidal Thoughts

WILLEMSTAD – A study conducted by addiction clinic Brasami and practice Calm Waters has found a clear connection between substance abuse, binge drinking and suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts on Curaçao.

According to the research, 35.2 percent of respondents reported having experienced suicidal thoughts at some point in their lives, while 8.7 percent said they had attempted suicide. The study also found that younger participants were more likely to report suicidal thoughts or attempts.

A total of 341 people participated in the study. After data corrections, 310 valid participants remained for analysis.

The results further showed that participants struggling with depression, anxiety complaints, trauma or substance abuse were significantly more likely to report suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts.

Researchers also found that 10.3 percent of participants said they did not talk to anyone about such feelings. A smaller group indicated they did not know where to seek help.

Family was identified most often as the main protective factor preventing suicide attempts, followed by future prospects, friendships and personal relationships.

Brasami and Calm Waters stressed the importance of continuing to break stigmas surrounding mental health so people seek support earlier instead of suffering in silence.

The organizations emphasized that open conversations about mental health can play an important role in prevention and support.

People struggling with suicidal thoughts or concerned about someone in their environment are encouraged to speak with someone they trust or seek professional help.
