WILLEMSTAD – The process to allow Starlink to offer satellite internet services in Curaçao has moved one step closer to approval. The draft national decree granting the concession has been signed and forwarded to the Directorate of Legislation and Legal Affairs (WJZ) for legal review.
The update was shared by Minister of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning (VVRP) Charles Cooper (MFK) on social media.
Starlink, the satellite internet company operated by SpaceX, previously submitted an application for a concession to provide internet services on Curaçao. The Regulatory Authority Curaçao (RAC) reviewed the request and issued a positive recommendation.
The next step is the legal assessment by WJZ. After that review, the draft decree must still be approved by the Council of Ministers. Once approved, it must be signed by the Governor of Curaçao and countersigned by the Prime Minister before returning to the RAC for implementation.
No official timeline has been announced for the final approval of the concession or the start of Starlink’s services on the island.
The introduction of Starlink would provide Curaçao with another option for internet connectivity through satellite technology, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure may be limited. The service could also strengthen digital resilience by providing an additional connectivity option during possible disruptions to existing networks.
