WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s social security expenditure exceeded projections by XCG 24 million through the second quarter of 2026, driven partly by higher spending on income support and emergency assistance.
The Board of Financial Supervision (Cft) says social security spending reached XCG 281 million through June, compared with XCG 234 million during the corresponding period in 2025 and XCG 242 million in 2024.
For the entire 2026 financial year, the approved budget provides XCG 541 million for social security.
The Cft said spending through the second quarter was XCG 24 million higher than budgeted for the period.
It specifically pointed to higher expenditure on “onderstand,” or income support, and emergency assistance as factors behind the overrun.
Subsidies and transfers are also running above budget, exceeding the projection for the first half of the year by XCG 22 million. The Cft linked part of that increase to payment of the Bashi premium at the beginning of 2026.
The financial supervisor wants both spending categories formally adjusted through a 2026 budget amendment.
Despite the higher expenditures, Curaçao’s overall ordinary-budget position remains positive because revenues, particularly tax collections, have risen even faster.
The government recorded a preliminary XCG 189 million ordinary-budget surplus through June.
