WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare Charetti America-Francisca has called for greater dialogue and cooperation as essential pillars of Curaçao's democracy, saying trust can only be rebuilt when people are willing to listen to one another.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 104th anniversary of the Harbor Strike, the minister said the restoration of the National Tripartite Dialogue reflects her long-held belief that democracy depends on continuous communication between institutions and society.
"A strong democracy begins with people who are willing to listen to each other," America-Francisca said.
According to the minister, disagreements are not the greatest threat to democracy. Instead, she warned that polarization, populism, distrust and a culture in which people refuse to hear opposing views pose far greater risks.
"Trust is restored by talking with one another—not about one another—but by seeking each other out, listening and sharing responsibility," she said.
America-Francisca argued that democratic institutions should promote dialogue even when interests differ, adding that cooperation becomes increasingly difficult once communication breaks down.
She said strengthening institutions is ultimately more important than relying on individual leaders, noting that consistent dialogue between government, employers and workers leads to better policymaking and increased public confidence.
