Local, | By Press release October 7, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) celebrated the International Day of Older Persons with a special gathering at the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort, bringing together seniors from several residential care homes across the island.

The October 1 celebration was organized by SOAW’s Social Development Sector under the theme “Seniors of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.”

Music played a central role in the event, with the ministry describing it as a universal language capable of connecting generations. For seniors in particular, music can provide joy and comfort, evoke memories and strengthen social connections.

Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare Charetti America-Francisca addressed those attending and emphasized the contribution older generations have made to Curaçao.

“You are part of our history, but you are also part of our present and the future we continue to build,” America-Francisca said. “You worked, cared for families, raised children and grandchildren, passed on knowledge and gave our community the foundation on which we stand today. That is why you deserve our respect and attention, but above all, you deserve to feel that you matter.”

The program, hosted by Cynthia Ricardo, included a musical moment of praise by Reinier Lijfrock, followed by entertainment from Romeo Heije. The group Tipiko Pasa Bon concluded the celebration, maintaining a festive atmosphere until noon.

At the end of the event, America-Francisca presented each participating senior care home with a TWS Bluetooth audio system and headphones.

SOAW said it intends to continue organizing activities for Curaçao’s senior citizens as part of its commitment to their well-being and participation in the community.
