Simulation Conducted in Punda to Assess Safety and Accessibility for Emergency Vehicles

Local, | By Press release June 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Several government agencies and emergency services conducted a simulation exercise in Punda on June 16, 2026, aimed at evaluating the safety and accessibility of streets and public spaces for large emergency vehicles, including fire trucks and rescue units.

The exercise was carried out jointly by the Curaçao Fire Department, the Curaçao Police Force (KPC), the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO), the Urban Planning Service (ROP), the Project Team for Supervision and Enforcement (PTH), and the Public Works Department (OW).

The simulation took place along several key streets and public areas in Punda, including Colombusstraat, Madurostraat, Hanchi Snoa, Gomezplein, Breedestraat, and Keukenstraat.

During the exercise, authorities identified a number of obstacles and areas requiring attention. These included outdoor terraces, concrete benches, planters, utility poles, roof structures that obstruct passage at certain locations, as well as lighting fixtures and decorative elements installed above streets and walkways.

The Ministry of Economic Development indicated that some business owners will be required to modify their permits to ensure compliance with safety and accessibility requirements for emergency and firefighting vehicles. The ministry emphasized that permit holders must always operate within the conditions outlined in their permits.

A report detailing all findings and identified issues will be prepared following the exercise. Authorities said the report will serve as the basis for corrective measures aimed at resolving the identified obstacles as quickly as possible and improving access for emergency services throughout the historic city center.
