WILLEMSTAD – Seventeen employees of the Judicial Youth Institution Curaçao (JJIC) recently participated in a specialized training course aimed at strengthening their ability to understand youth behavior, manage aggression and respond effectively to challenging situations in a detention environment.
The course, titled "Working in Detention," was provided by SKUCHAMI as part of JJIC's ongoing efforts to invest in the professional development of its personnel.

The training focused on equipping employees with additional knowledge and practical skills to work more effectively with young people in detention, particularly when dealing with difficult behavior and potentially escalating situations.
Understanding Youth Behavior
An important component of the course was recognizing and understanding the behavior of young people.
Participants examined different behavioral patterns and learned how to interpret situations that may arise during their daily interactions with detained youth.
The training also addressed various forms of aggression and appropriate ways to respond when tensions increase.
Special attention was given to identifying situations that could escalate and developing effective approaches to managing them.
By strengthening their understanding of youth behavior, employees are expected to be better prepared to respond appropriately to the different challenges they encounter in their work.
Communication and Conflict Management
Communication was another central element of the training.
Participants explored how effective communication can contribute to managing difficult interactions and preventing situations from escalating unnecessarily.
The course also included the analysis of practical situations that employees may encounter in a detention setting.
These exercises were intended to help participants apply their knowledge to realistic circumstances and develop appropriate responses.
According to the institution, the training provided employees with a better understanding of situations that can arise when working with young people and helped them develop more effective ways of responding.
Continued Investment in Professional Development
JJIC considers the training part of its commitment to improving the professional skills of employees responsible for supervising and working with young people in detention.
The institution emphasizes that personnel must be equipped with the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform their duties responsibly and respond appropriately to challenging circumstances.
Through the "Working in Detention" course, JJIC aims to strengthen employees' professional competence and improve their preparedness for difficult situations.
The initiative reflects the institution's continued focus on staff development and the importance of providing personnel with practical tools to manage behavior, aggression and communication in a youth detention environment.
