SDKK Launches ‘Back to School – Barbershop’ Project to Provide Free Haircuts for Children

Local, | By Press release August 17, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Detention and Correction Center (SDKK) will launch its “Back to School – Barbershop” project next week, giving children across Curaçao an opportunity to receive a haircut before the start of the new school year.

The initiative will take place from August 17 through 19 at three locations across the island. The project is intended both to give back to the community and to provide SDKK clients who have completed a barbering course with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and professionalism they acquired during their training.

To reach as many children as possible, the haircuts will be offered in three different neighborhoods. According to SDKK, there will be capacity to provide haircuts to more than 100 children at each location.

The first event will take place Monday, August 17, at Sentro Bario Montaña. On Tuesday, August 18, the barbers will move to the Scouting clubhouse in Santa Maria, next to Santana di Santa Maria. The final event will be held Wednesday, August 19, at Sentro Bario Tera Kora.

The project forms part of efforts to give SDKK clients practical experience while allowing them to use skills acquired through vocational training to make a positive contribution to the community.

SDKK clients will participate in the initiative together with personnel from the Curaçao Fire Department and Curaçao Police Force.

Parents and guardians interested in registering children for the project can contact SDKK's Education, Formation and Training Department at 434-8447 or 434-8494. Registration is also available through WhatsApp at 694-2187.
