Schools to Dismiss Students Early for Curaçao’s World Cup Match

Local, | By Correspondent June 24, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Schools across Curaçao are being given the opportunity to end classes early on Thursday to allow students, teachers, and staff to follow the national team’s crucial FIFA World Cup match.

Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Sithree van Heydoorn informed school boards that educational activities in the public primary education system will conclude at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday.

According to the minister, the measure will allow school personnel sufficient time to prepare for and enjoy the highly anticipated World Cup fixture involving Curaçao’s national football team.

Van Heydoorn noted that the adjustment is possible because the second session of the central examinations has already been completed. He also pointed out that most schools have finished their testing periods and are currently engaged in end-of-school-year activities.

The minister has also encouraged boards of special education schools, secondary schools, and vocational education institutions to explore whether they can implement similar arrangements. However, he emphasized that any decision should ensure that educational activities and essential services continue without disruption.

The move comes as Curaçao prepares for its final group-stage match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a historic event that has generated widespread excitement and national pride across the island.

Government agencies, businesses, and organizations have increasingly adjusted schedules this week to give employees and residents the opportunity to support the national team during its World Cup campaign.
