Saharan Dust Reaches Curaçao, Government Issues Health Advice

| By Correspondent March 4, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao experiences recurring episodes of Saharan dust each year as large clouds of sand and particles travel from North Africa across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. According to the government, the phenomenon can reduce visibility and cause irritation to the eyes.

In a public advisory, authorities warned that the fine dust particles in the air may lead to discomfort, particularly for people with sensitive eyes. Residents are therefore advised to take simple precautions to limit irritation.

The government recommends wearing sunglasses outdoors, avoiding rubbing the eyes and using eye drops if necessary. People experiencing persistent symptoms are encouraged to seek medical advice.

Despite the potential inconvenience, officials note that Saharan dust can also have positive effects. The mineral-rich particles carried across the ocean can contribute nutrients that benefit local agriculture.

The public is advised to follow updates and forecasts issued by the Meteorological Service and to remain alert to possible health effects while the dust is present.
