SYDNEY – Fred Rutten began his tenure as head coach of the Curaçao national team with a 2-0 defeat against China in a friendly match played in Sydney, as part of preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
The loss not only highlighted a lack of finishing but also exposed structural weaknesses in Curaçao’s play. The team struggled to build attacks and was frequently inaccurate in possession, with moves breaking down before becoming dangerous.

Difficult weather conditions, including rain, wind, and low temperatures, played a role, but China’s organization proved decisive. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Curaçao created few clear chances, while China remained compact and capitalized on mistakes.
The opening goal came just before halftime from a set piece, where Curaçao’s defense was poorly positioned. In the second half, the match was effectively decided when a defensive error by Sherel Floranus allowed Zhang Yuning to score the second goal.
Rutten started with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Eloy Room in goal, supported by players such as Juninho Bacuna and Riechedly Bazoer. Several substitutions were made in the second half, but they failed to change the course of the game.
Curaçao only became threatening late in the match, but continued to struggle with sloppy play and individual errors. China was ultimately the more organized and effective side throughout the game.
The defeat comes as Curaçao prepares for the World Cup in the United States, for which the team qualified under former head coach Dick Advocaat. In the group stage, Curaçao is set to face Germany, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast.
Curaçao will have another opportunity to improve on Tuesday, when they take on Australia in their next friendly match.
