Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra Builds Cultural Bridges at SAIL Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD – Against the colorful backdrop of Willemstad and the towering tall ships of SAIL Curaçao, the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra is using music to connect soldiers, residents, and visitors during nine days of performances on the island.

The orchestra, part of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, arrived in Curaçao on April 30 for what its leadership describes as more than just a performance schedule.

For the musicians, the trip represents a mission in itself—using music as a bridge between the military and society.

Major Toine, director of the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra, said music creates a universal connection that goes beyond words.

“We can build a soft bridge to society through music, because music is a language everyone understands,” he said.

The orchestra is performing as part of SAIL Curaçao, locally known as Velas Curaçao, a maritime event held once every four years and centered around visiting tall ships and naval cooperation.

During the event, the Dutch Ministry of Defence is supporting the maritime activities taking place across the island.

Traditionally, the Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine represents Dutch military music at the event, but due to obligations in the Netherlands, this year the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra stepped in.

Despite the unexpected switch, organizers say the Air Force musicians have taken over the role with distinction, contributing to the atmosphere of unity and cooperation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The performances are part of the broader goal of strengthening ties between the military and the Caribbean communities of the Kingdom, using music as a tool for remembrance, connection, and cultural exchange.
