Rio Canario Wins Thrilling ‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ Match Against Brievengat

| By Correspondent February 20, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – After the carnival season, the spotlight has shifted back to youth sports with the continuation of the ‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ competitions organized by Fundashon Bicentini. In an exciting and closely contested match between the neighborhood teams of Rio Canario and Brievengat, Rio Canario emerged victorious with an 8–7 win.

The match featured unexpected twists and intense play, with both teams pushing themselves to the limit. Brievengat continued to fight until the final minute and stayed committed to its style of play, but ultimately was unable to turn the narrow deficit around.

Despite the loss, the atmosphere within the Brievengat team was marked more by pride and unity than disappointment. According to the organizers, the match once again demonstrated that the initiative goes beyond sporting results alone. The focus is on teamwork, personal development, and creating positive experiences for young people, both on and off the field.

Remko Bicentini emphasized that spirit after the game. “The drive shown by the players and their neighborhood teams is impressive. Their commitment, the way they support each other, and how they give everything to make it a great match together—that is what this is all about. For us, it is also essential that this mutual support and camaraderie are not only visible on the football field, but also make a difference in the lives of young people beyond the game,” he said.

The ‘Van Straat naar Stadion’ project continues to serve as a platform for youth development, using sport as a tool to strengthen social bonds and encourage positive growth within Curaçao’s neighborhoods.
