WILLEMSTAD – Repair work on one of the faulty wind turbines at the Koraal Tabak wind farm is beginning today, as efforts intensify to restore renewable generation capacity following weeks of electricity supply problems on Curaçao.
A large crane was assembled at the wind farm on Tuesday to allow technicians to dismantle part of the affected turbine. Work to remove and replace the defective component is scheduled to begin today.
The repair requires specialized equipment that was not immediately available on the island. The necessary equipment arrived in Curaçao by ship last week, clearing the way for the complex operation.
At the end of July, three of the five relatively new wind turbines at Koraal Tabak were experiencing technical problems, significantly reducing the amount of electricity the facility could contribute to the grid.
The repairs come at a critical time for Curaçao's electricity system. The island has experienced repeated power interruptions in recent weeks amid capacity problems at utility company Aqualectra.
Wind energy forms an important part of Curaçao's overall electricity generation capacity. When turbines are unavailable, Aqualectra has less generating capacity to meet demand, particularly when conventional generating units are also undergoing maintenance or experiencing unexpected failures.
Restoring the Koraal Tabak turbine is therefore considered important for strengthening the electricity supply. Each additional megawatt brought back online can provide Aqualectra with more flexibility and reduce pressure on other generating units.
The benefit will be particularly noticeable during periods of favorable wind conditions, when the wind farms can provide a larger share of the island's electricity needs.
The start of the repair operation represents another step toward restoring generation capacity as Aqualectra works to stabilize Curaçao's electricity system and reduce the risk of further outages.
