WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s public school system will officially kick off preparations for the 2026-2027 academic year on Monday, August 17, with a joint opening conference focused on the personal development and well-being of educators.
The Public Schools Service (DOS) will open the new academic year at Johan Mauritsschool before education professionals spread across 27 locations in Otrobanda to participate in a series of workshops.
This year’s opening is being held under the theme “Mi ta Outéntiko,” or “I Am Authentic.”
Rather than concentrating primarily on curriculum and classroom instruction, the program places the teacher as an individual at the center of the day.
According to DOS, experiences during the previous school year demonstrated the need to devote greater attention to the well-being and personal development of education professionals.
Workshops will therefore address subjects including health, resilience, creativity, inclusion, future-oriented education and Curaçaoan identity.
The opening conference comes as the government is also working on improvements to school infrastructure.
Inspections began at several schools earlier this year in preparation for a tender to install solar panels. The initiative forms part of the “Mehorashon di Enseñansa Kòrsou” program, which aims to improve not only the quality of education but also school buildings and infrastructure.
The investments are part of broader preparations for the new academic year, during which Curaçao is placing increased attention on the physical and social environment in which students and teachers operate.
While public school personnel begin their preparations on August 17, parents are advised to consult their individual schools or school boards for the precise date on which students are expected to return to class.
