Public Art Gains Importance in Neighborhood Development on Curaçao

Local, Entertainment, | By Correspondent April 7, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Public art is playing an increasingly important role in the development of neighborhoods across Curaçao, according to artist and founder of SKOR Kòrsou, Avantia Damberg.

Damberg is set to deliver a presentation on April 9 focusing on the impact of art on the living environment and the broader role it plays in shaping communities.

According to the artist, murals, community art projects, and sculptures contribute not only to the visual appeal of neighborhoods, but also to social cohesion, public safety, and economic activity. Public art, she noted, influences how both residents and visitors experience their surroundings, including their connection to the natural environment.

The upcoming presentation will highlight the broader value of art, which Damberg says extends beyond decoration. By integrating art visibly into neighborhoods, communities can develop a stronger identity and create a different, more engaging experience of the urban environment.

The growing emphasis on public art reflects a wider trend in Curaçao, where cultural initiatives are increasingly seen as a tool for community development and urban revitalization.
