Protected Savonet Nature Area Damaged After Large Section of Forest Cleared

Local, | By Correspondent May 28, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Nature conservationists in Curaçao are expressing shock and outrage after a large section of protected forest in the Savonet area was completely cleared using heavy machinery.

The destruction reportedly took place in a protected natural zone located between the historic slave houses and Christoffel Park, one of Curaçao’s most important ecological and cultural heritage areas.

Environmental organization Carmabi immediately raised the alarm after discovering the damage and contacted the Bandabou police. An official report has since been filed at the police station in Barber.

Because the affected land belongs to the government, the formal criminal complaint must be submitted through Domain Management (Domeinbeheer).

Authorities from the enforcement team of the Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning (VVRP), together with Domain Management, have now been informed and are launching an investigation into the incident.

At this stage, it remains unclear who ordered the clearing work or who carried out the destruction.

The incident has sparked serious concern among environmental groups because the Savonet and Christoffel Park region is considered one of the island’s most valuable natural and historical areas, home to protected ecosystems, native vegetation, and important cultural landmarks.

Conservationists fear the damage could have long-term environmental consequences if stricter oversight and enforcement are not implemented in protected areas.
