WILLEMSTAD - Once again, we reached the start of a new school year. Unfortunately, many children from families in need did not have a schoolbag or the other essential supplies required for school. The level of need within our community remains significant.
It was encouraging to see companies and organizations supporting this important cause by providing children with schoolbags and the supplies they need to begin the new school year. These efforts deserve our appreciation, as they motivate children to start school with enthusiasm and encourage them to do their very best.
The service clubs Curaçao Lions Club, Rotary Willemstad, Rotary Curaçao and Kiwanis Club Curaçao sincerely appreciate the generosity of every company and organization involved. At the same time, we are making an urgent appeal: PLEASE let us protect our children!
When pictures/videos are taken for publication in the media or on social media, PLEASE make sure that no child can be identified. Give the children their gifts, but do not expose them publicly. We must protect their privacy and dignity. Unfortunately, the world can be cruel, and publicly showing a child could make that child a target for teasing, bullying or harassment.
There is an important distinction between taking photographs at a general children’s event, such as a celebration, cultural activity or art presentation and publicly showing identifiable children receiving food, clothing, school supplies or other essential assistance.
