| By Correspondent February 26, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The court has handed down sentences in the carjacking case stemming from a violent incident on August 20 last year, in which a failed robbery attempt escalated into a fatal confrontation. Three young suspects stood trial for attempted car theft after the situation spiraled out of control when one of them was found to be armed.

During the incident, a female police officer who was off duty and in civilian clothes felt compelled to open fire. One of the suspects was fatally shot.

On Wednesday, the court sentenced two of the youths to 32 months in prison. The third suspect received a sentence of 24 months in juvenile detention, six months of which were suspended. The court noted that this suspect had cooperated with the investigation, which was taken into account in determining his sentence.

In its ruling, the court emphasized that it considered the young age of the defendants. At the same time, judges pointed to the serious nature of the offense and the profound impact the case has had on those involved and on society at large.

The verdict brings a judicial conclusion to a case that drew significant public attention due to its tragic outcome and the circumstances under which a police officer resorted to the use of lethal force.
