Prime Minister Pisas Pays Tribute to Former Suriname President Santokhi at State Funeral

PARAMARIBO – Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas has paid tribute to former Suriname president Chandrikapersad Santokhi, describing him as a leader who built bridges, promoted unity, and was willing to take difficult decisions for the benefit of his people.

Pisas delivered his remarks during the state cremation ceremony held at De Olifant, where regional leaders and dignitaries gathered to honor Santokhi’s legacy.

According to the Curaçao prime minister, Santokhi was driven by a deep commitment to improving the lives of the Surinamese people. He noted that the former president continued to push forward, even when decisions affected his popularity, because of his belief in long-term progress.

Pisas, who first met Santokhi in 2022, said the passing of the former head of state is also a personal loss. He recalled their growing friendship and the close ties between Curaçao and Suriname during Santokhi’s leadership.

The prime minister highlighted Santokhi’s role within the Caribbean Community, where he served as chairman and helped facilitate Curaçao’s accession as an associate member. According to Pisas, this marked an important milestone for the island.

He also reflected on the personal relationship between the two leaders, noting that Santokhi regularly invited him to his residence and that he attended Suriname’s Independence Day celebrations on multiple occasions.

Pisas further pointed out a shared background between the two men, emphasizing that both began their careers as police officers before rising to the highest office in their respective countries.

In closing, the prime minister delivered an emotional farewell, referring to Santokhi as a close friend and expressing that he will be deeply missed.

Santokhi’s death has prompted tributes across the region, with leaders highlighting his contributions to regional cooperation, governance, and diplomacy.
