Prime Minister Pisas meets with National SDG Commission on sustainable development goals

WILLEMSTAD – Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas met on Tuesday with members of Curaçao’s National Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Commission to discuss the island’s strategy for advancing sustainable development.

The meeting was chaired by Christa Zuiverloon, who leads the National SDG Commission. Representatives from the commission’s secretariat, the Statistical Commission and subcommittees representing the pillars People, Planet and Prosperity also attended the discussion.

The National Commission for Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals was established by government decree on January 13, 2020. Its role is to guide and coordinate national efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development in Curaçao in line with the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 framework.

During the meeting, attention was given to several priority goals identified for the island. These include eradicating poverty, improving health and well-being, strengthening access to quality education, expanding affordable and clean energy, promoting decent work and economic growth, and protecting marine ecosystems.

The government indicated that additional steps will soon be taken to further implement and strengthen these sustainable development objectives across the island.

Participants in the meeting included representatives from several institutions and ministries, among them the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the Curaçao Chamber of Commerce, the Curaçao Tourist Board, the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, and various government ministries including Finance, Justice, Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW), and Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning.

According to the government, cooperation between public institutions, the private sector and civil society will be essential to advancing the SDG agenda and promoting long-term sustainable development in Curaçao.
