WILLEMSTAD – Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas met on Wednesday, July 8, with a delegation representing Curaçao's agricultural cooperatives, which presented a resolution calling for stronger government action to combat livestock theft and animal abuse on the island.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the resolution reflects the concerns of a broad group of stakeholders within the agricultural sector, who are urging authorities to take more decisive measures against crimes that continue to affect farmers and livestock owners.

During the meeting, livestock theft victim Mr. Pieters shared his personal experience, describing the impact that repeated thefts have had on his livelihood. His testimony highlighted the financial and emotional consequences that these crimes have on those working in the agricultural sector.

The meeting resulted in a concrete agreement to launch a series of consultations involving the relevant parties. These discussions will focus on developing and implementing practical measures aimed at addressing livestock theft and the mistreatment of animals.

Prime Minister Pisas stressed that protecting Curaçao's agricultural sector remains a government priority. He said the government will continue working closely with the Ministry of Justice and other relevant institutions to strengthen efforts against livestock theft and animal abuse.

The government hopes that the collaborative approach will lead to sustainable solutions that not only improve security for farmers but also contribute to the long-term development and protection of Curaçao's agricultural sector and the wider community.
