WILLEMSTAD – Fundashon Prevenshon has reaffirmed its central role in preventive healthcare in Curaçao, following recent statements by Minister of Health Tyron Boekhoudt emphasizing the need to strengthen prevention within the island’s healthcare system.
In response, the foundation stressed that prevention is not a new concept locally, but rather a long-established pillar of public health policy. According to Prevenshon, it has been actively developing and implementing prevention programs for more than fifteen years, focusing on evidence-based approaches accessible to the entire population.
Over the years, this work has resulted in the rollout of several national screening programs, including breast cancer screening in 2010, cervical cancer screening in 2017, and colorectal cancer screening in 2020. Most recently, in March 2026, the organization introduced a new program targeting non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and obesity, combining early detection with lifestyle interventions under the initiative known as Vita.
The statement follows a recent strategic session involving the Ministry of Health and the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, where discussions focused on prevention strategies, behavioral interventions, and the use of data and monitoring in shaping health policy.
Prevenshon indicated that it welcomes the renewed political focus on prevention, while underscoring that sustained investment and collaboration are essential to build on existing programs and further strengthen the island’s healthcare system.
