WILLEMSTAD – Several neighborhoods across Curaçao were left without electricity on Saturday evening following a disruption in the island’s power grid, according to Aqualectra.
The utility company announced on social media that it had started “switching” parts of the network, a measure used to manage the system and protect the grid during technical disturbances.
Among the areas affected are Noord Rozendaal, Heintjekool, parts of Buena Vista, Kanga, Churchill Plaza, Dein, Seru Molina, Scherpenheuvel and the Klein Kwartier industrial zone.
Power outages were also reported in Seru Lora, Santa Rosa, parts of Suffisant, Amerikanenkamp, Sabana Hundo, Langeland, Montaña, Montaña Rey, Recompensa, Fuik, Seru Machu and Katoentuin.
Aqualectra said it expects electricity service to be restored in the affected neighborhoods around 9:00 p.m.
The company has not yet disclosed the cause of the disruption. Residents noted that weather conditions on the island were relatively calm, with little wind during the day, although it remains unclear whether this had any connection to the outage.
Aqualectra said it will continue to provide updates, including information on any additional areas that may be affected as switching operations continue across the network.
