Poverty in Curaçao Increasing Despite Lower Income Deprivation

Local, Economy, | By Correspondent April 23, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – While fewer households in Curaçao are classified as income-poor, multidimensional poverty is on the rise, revealing a shift in the nature of hardship on the island.

According to the CBS (Central Bureau of Statistics) report, the share of households experiencing income poverty declined between 2011 and 2023. However, non-monetary deprivation increased over the same period.

This means that even households with sufficient income are facing challenges such as inadequate housing, limited education opportunities or unstable employment.

The report concludes that poverty in Curaçao is becoming more complex and cannot be addressed through income support alone.

Policymakers are urged to adopt a broader approach that tackles structural issues across multiple sectors.
