WILLEMSTAD – Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP) says unity has been restored within the opposition party following internal tensions over leadership and party governance that surfaced publicly in recent days.
During a general membership meeting held on Monday, May 11, party leaders presented what they described as a broad overview of the work carried out by the party in recent months as part of continuing the “78-year trajectory” of PNP.
According to the party, the meeting was well attended by members determined to see PNP continue growing and becoming stronger politically.
During the gathering, members were given the opportunity to express concerns and raise questions directly with the leadership. The party board reportedly committed itself to organizing another general membership meeting in the near future to continue updating members on developments within the organization.
At the end of the meeting, members reaffirmed their commitment to the party and emphasized that the cause of PNP is “greater than any difference of opinion.”
The party also declared that PNP intends to continue existing “for another 78 years.”
The statement appears intended to calm internal unrest that became public only days earlier.
On May 8, reports emerged of strong internal disagreements within the party concerning leadership and governance issues. Several members reportedly wanted to see a new executive board installed.
Party president Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia was also accused by critics within the party of allegedly acting contrary to internal rules, although it remains unclear which specific regulations were allegedly violated.
Sources indicated that discussions inside the party had become highly intense.
The latest press release now suggests that party leadership is attempting to restore stability and prevent deeper divisions within one of Curaçao’s main opposition parties ahead of future political battles in Parliament and national politics.
