WILLEMSTAD – With the renovation of Curaçao’s Mashe Nobo, better known as the Round Market, nearing completion, authorities are already preparing the next major upgrade in the island’s traditional market infrastructure: the renovation of Plasa Bieu (old market).

According to Remy Ricardo, interim director of Fundashon Marshe, plans are being finalized to modernize the Old Market as part of broader efforts to improve public market facilities in the capital.

Ricardo said the renovation of Plasa Bieu will focus primarily on infrastructure improvements, including the refurbishment of the market’s restroom facilities and major work on the roof.

In addition, several repair and maintenance projects will be carried out throughout the building to address wear and tear from years of heavy use.

The Old Market last underwent renovation in 2017, and officials say another upgrade has become necessary to maintain hygiene standards and improve the overall visitor experience.

Plasa Bieu remains one of Curaçao’s most iconic culinary landmarks, attracting both tourists and local residents year-round.

The market is widely known for serving traditional Curaçao dishes such as yambo, kadushi soup, fish specialties and a variety of local stews, making it a key destination for authentic island cuisine.

Because of its constant daily activity and food preparation environment, maintaining sanitary conditions and proper infrastructure has become increasingly important.

Ricardo said the planned improvements are intended to strengthen hygiene and public health standards while preserving the cultural and culinary identity of the market.

The upcoming Plasa Bieu renovation follows the near completion of the restoration of Mashe Nobo, one of Willemstad’s most historic market buildings.

The Round Market project has been part of broader efforts to revitalize important public spaces in the city center and restore historical market infrastructure.

With both projects, Fundashon Marshe aims to modernize Curaçao’s market facilities while maintaining their historical and cultural importance.

No official start date for the Plasa Bieu renovation has yet been announced, but preparations are now underway as the Mashe Nobo project moves closer to its reopening.
